Ethics Research

Keith and I researched the Martha Stewart ordeal. In particular, the moments after her sentencing. Stewart declined to offer her fans and loyal customers and apology. The reason behind not announcing an apology lies in the process of the legal system. Immediately after being sentenced, she knew that she would want an appeal. She knew that she had done un-ethical things but hoped to be let off the hook (so to say) through a loop hole. If she had offered an apology, her case for an appeal would suffer severely. She should have done the right thing and stopped there. An apology wouldnt fix things, but show her remorse for what she had done. In this instance, we have un-ethical business procedures followed by poor ethics in general.

Ethics

First off, there were a lot of statistics in that article. I'm always skeptical of statistics. Anyways, I do believe that business ethics are quite possibly a problem in todays' workplace. I'm not so sure as to how much of a distraction poor ethics can cause. It'd have to be evaluated case by case. Again, I'm very skeptical of these stats. I truly believe that certain behaviors in the corporate world can ruin an office. Promoting an unworthy employee simply bc he or she is your favorite will spoil morality. How can you expect your employees to work hard if they dont believe they cant advance within the company? You cant. I'm very shocked at these numbers. It seems like every workplace is facing ethics issues.

Web vs Paper

Writing on the web is easier than writing on paper. I can type much faster than I can write. Also, word processing makes writing much easier. They are the same in that the information, thoughts, and ideas are all the same. They are different in that writing takes much longer. The most important thing to consider when transferring a document formerly read on paper to the Web is the audience. You must remember that millions of potential people will read your document. You want to make sure all ideas are well thought out and grammar is correct.

I cannot believe that this semester is 1 MONTH away from ending! This was undoubtedly the quickest semester i've had (ive had way too many due to the fact im taking the 5 yr path to graduation lol). Anyways, spring break was WILD! I went to panama city beach, fl for 7days/7nights!...I really didnt wanna come back. Im so glad that i didnt max out a credit card again like i did last spring break (south beach miami)....mom and dad didnt like that bill in the mail AT ALL!! I met sooooo many girls from The Ohio State University (they get angry if you dont include the "the"). MTV was there and had events all and every day. Im not an environmentalist, but when you have thousands of college students....on a beach....on spring break....and beer, the aftermath is thousands and thousands (literally) of empty beer cans littered along the shore. Sure, there were volunteers trying to clean up a bit, but they were obviously fighting a lost cause. I didnt enjoy walking on empty beer cans. I got sick on tuesday evening...i slept from about 8pm tuesday to 6 pm wednesday (literally). i am just now feeling better. Well, i could talk forever, but i'll spare you the torture. Have a good one!

Lying Resumes

This article reminded me when the Georgia Tech head football coach at the time (George O'leary) was fired for lying on his resume. I forget what he lied about but he had accepted a new position at Notre Dame to become their head ball coach and was fired like 2 days after lol. But i think that many people do lie on their resume's but only slightly. As competitive as the business world is, im not surprised.

Presentations

One of my favorite presentations was Keiths'. Im fascinated with how people train animals to do things. Ive always wondered how the first horse was ever trained ( i guess mules fall into this category). Keith presented his topic very well; he was also dressed accordingly. His actual slides were great in that they didnt have too much information per bullet. I learned a lot about mules. It was definitely memorable.

Reflection on interview

I unfortunately wasnt able to do my interview last week. I somehow managed to injure my back last week. When I have the chance to interview this week, I expect to get a real taste of how an interview for entrance to grad school really is. Luckily, our professor is currently pursuing her Doctorate degree, so i'm sure she knows the interviewing process well. I'll definitely add more to this blog immediately after my interview.

So as i was sitting down in the 2nd floor of the library in the verrrrrry back, and oddly, i briefly paused from studying and began to read messages carved on the desk and adjacent wall. "AT <3 class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">couldnt help but think "President Barker, C. D. Davies, or former governor Beasley couldve studied in this exact same spot". It gave me a great since of pride and respect. I believe I gained a greater perspective on how much of an honor and privilege it is to be able to say that I am a student at Clemson University. A lot of well respected people, innovators, politicians, professional athletes and people of great character have walked across the same campus as I. That is very cool.

Cover Letters

"The Best Use of a Cover Letter" cleared a few things up for me. Initially, before reading the article, I thought that a cover letter could be generic. I thought that it could be used in mass e-mailings. The article made a great point in that your cover letter should basically show exactly how you can help the company grow and how well you fit the companies' goals and values. I found it very surprising that a cover letter has a limited value. I surely thought that a cover letter was always the first thing that a hiring manager read. I agree with all aspects of the article. After all, this hiring manager has reviewed 60,000 resumes. This was very helpful and I will return to this particular article when I create my cover letters.

Intervies Response

I read articles about "stress", and "the second interview". The stress article gave a couple of GREAT tips on how to deal with the issue. I learned that there will most likely be an awkward moment, or a question that you couldve answered better. The article also stated to arrive 10 minutes early. I really agreed with this one. The earlier you arrive, the more time you have to over analyze things, and work yourself up. 10 min. is a great starting point as to how early you should arrive. The "second interview" article was unique because ive never really heard too much pertaining to the second interview. It seems like all interview tips and strategies are geared towards the first interview. This article suggested that you find out as much as possible about the interviewers. The best piece of advice I took from this one was that your answers should be more concrete; not generalized. I think the point of this is to really give the interviewer a look into exactly how your job skills fit with the companys' goal.

10 years from now....

Wow....10 years from now seems so far away. Even though it seems like a long time away, I can remember 10 years ago (7th grade) like it was yesterday. I know it'll fly by quickly. 10 years from now I want to be living in either Charlotte, or Greenville. I am a Financial Management major and I am most certain as to the particular field I want to enter. I want to be an investment banker in 10 years. The stock market has always seemed interesting to me. Also, I feel like I could take a great sense of pride in knowing that I played a vital role in helping a client reach his or her financial goal. 10 years from now, I want to play a role that will truly help families go on vacation, send kids to college, and prepare for retirement. I also want to have a wife and kids by this time. I'd like to be a role model in the community and for my kids. I also want to be a well established banker. I guess what I'm saying, it that I want to be high up on the totem pole, lol. 10 years from now, I will have both my undergraduate and graduate (MBA) degrees, Series 7 and 63 certifications, be well established, and have my own family.
